Development began with the aim of creating an MH-class seabass rod.
During the development process, the team frequently utilized big baits and large minnows. Consequently, the role of handling lighter weights—typical of a standard medium-class rod—was delegated to a separate model, allowing the Staccato 86 to evolve into a rod specialized for large lures and trophy-sized fish.
The rod bears the "Japanese Lates" logo.
Its power rating is designated as MH based on the requirements for targeting Japanese Lates, rather than the standard MH rating for conventional seabass rods.
For seabass fishing, it excels in small-to-medium rivers and is highly effective for patterns involving big minnows (such as Gizzard Shad imitations) and big baits.
It features the "Straw Setting" guide system common to the Staccato series, allowing anglers to fully experience the unique characteristics of the Staccato blank.
This rod is also adept at high-power battles around bridge piers and structures in areas with significant tidal ranges; it handles 5kg-class seabass with ease, retaining plenty of reserve power.
During testing, staff members landed numerous large fish—most notably a Japanese Lates measuring 126cm and weighing an estimated 30kg-plus—without ever feeling uneasy during the fight.
Recommended line specifications range from PE #1.5 to #3, with shock leaders of 30–80 lb. The rod is primarily designed for lures in the 30–70g range.
The rear grip length is optimized for wading.
