The goal was to combine a rolling action (which accentuates the flash) with a subtle tail action (capable of enticing even the most stubborn, "tough" bass).
A rolling action is generated when the body tilts to deflect the water pressure acting upon its underside; therefore, a thicker profile—extending all the way to the tail—is advantageous for effectively catching that water pressure.
Conversely, to achieve the delicate tail movement needed to trigger a bite from a tough bass, the tail itself needs to be thin and slender.
This seemingly contradictory challenge was solved by incorporating a fin-like support structure along the underside of the tail.
This allows the thin, slender tail to maintain just the right amount of tension, enabling it to catch the water effectively and translate that force into a rolling action.
